PPC1 was built by Tyco in 2009 for PIPE Networks of Australia, to link Sydney with Guam. A spur provides connectivity between Madang, Papua New Guinea, and Sydney. At launch the 7,185 km cable supported 2.56 Tbps across two fibre optic pairs. PPC-1 was Australia's first submarine cable independent of incumbent carrier Telstra, and helped introduce competition into the Australian transit market. In 2006 2016 it suffered a several week long outage due to a deep sea fault.
