In 1998 Nauru's government established the Nauru Internet Centre, or CENPACNET, to provide Internet Service to the island and operate the country's country code (.nr) domain. Eleven years later in 2009 Digicel built the island's first mobile network. Today around 2/3 of Nauru's Internet traffic is served by Cenpac, with the balance served by Digicel.
Nauru has no submarine cable connectivity and with a population of around ten thousand residents will likely never support one. It relies on satellite services from a number of providers including O3b, who land Nauru's traffic in Australia.
