In 1998 Nauru's government established the Nauru Internet Centre, or CENPAC, to provide Internet Service to the island and operate the country's country code (.nr) domain. Eleven years later in 2009 Digicel built the island's first mobile network. Today around 54% of Nauru's Internet traffic is served by Digicel, with the balance served by Cenpac.

Nauru relies on satellite services from a number of providers including O3b Networks, who land Nauru's traffic in Australia. They've received a grant from the Asian Development Bank to participate in the EMC or Eastern Micronesia Cable project, which will link the Federated States of Micronesia with Kiribati.
