A diverse telecommunications market in Fiji has been consolidated into just two players, operating a total of four brands. Digicel Fiji operates a cellular and broadband network in Fiji, and manages network operations for other Digicel networks in Tonga and Vanuatu. Amalgamated Telecommunications Holdings, or ATH, owns the remaining three carriers. Vodafone Fiji is a GSM based mobile carrier. Telecom Fiji operates a fixed network and a CDMA based cellular network. FinTel operates international calling and Internet services, and manages the country's cable landing station in Suva. ATH has also recently acquired Telecom Kiribati.
Fiji has long been a landing station for submarine cables, but it's first fibre-optic connection came with the Southern Cross Cable Network in 2001. Since then it's become a hub for cables looking for onward connectivity, including Interchange to Port Vila, Vanuatu, and Tonga Suva to Nuku'alofa.

After a few informal peering arrangements between carriers, the Telecommunications Authority of Fiji launched a national Internet Exchange in Suva, the Fiji IX. All major networks now connect.
