Solomon Islands
With more than 900 islands, and half a million people the Solomon Islands is a challenging environment for telecommunications. Our Telekom, owned by two government investment funds, has participated in the market as a corporation since 1988 as a full service provider offering fixed telephony, fixed line broadband, and mobile voice and data. Our Telekom's network covers all provinces and towns. Competition came to the Solomons in 2010 with the introduction of BeMobile Vodafone offering mobile voice and data services in Guadalcanal, Malaita, Western, & Central Provinces.
An extensive satellite network based on NewSkies NSS-9 ties Our Telekom's domestic network together, while O3b Networks is used for international connectivity via an earth station in Hawaii. While the Solomon Islands don't currently have submarine fibre connectivity, they will soon be connected to Sydney via the Coral Seas Cable System.
