Marshall Islands
The National Telecommunications Authority of the Marshall Islands, also known as MINTA or NTAMAR, provides all telecommunications services into the Republic. The island chain is heavily dependent on satellite communications, and has a number of services terminating in Guam. MINTA provides fixed and mobile communications, and high speed broadband in some locations. Ten remote islands have tele-centres with telephones, fax machines, and Internet access.
In 2009 the HANTRU-1 submarine fibre optic cable was installed between Majuro and Guam, with branches to the Republic's Kwajalein Atoll and to Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia. The primary customer of the cable is the US armed forces, who have been present in the Marshall Islands since the second World War.
